Innovative Biomaterials for Sustainable Medical Implants: A Circular Economy Approach

The escalating demand for medical implants, coupled with growing environmental concerns, necessitates a paradigm shift towards sustainable biomaterials and circular economy principles. This review explores innovative biomaterials derived from renewable resources and waste streams, focusing on their potential to replace traditional, non-biodegradable implant materials. We discuss the utilization of natural polymers, bio-derived ceramics, and recycled materials for fabricating implants with enhanced biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical properties. Furthermore, we examine the implementation of circular economy strategies, including closed-loop recycling, upcycling, and design for disassembly, to minimize waste and promote resource efficiency in the implant lifecycle. By highlighting recent advancements in material science and engineering, this review underscores the importance of a holistic, sustainable approach to medical implant development, ensuring both patient well-being and environmental stewardship.
