Hepatocellular carcinoma in a non-cirrhotic HBV-patient: contribution of schistosomiasis co-infection?
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects many people around the world, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is common in cirrhotics. However, less frequently, the development of HCC in non-cirrhotic patients is also possible. In endemic countries for schistosomiasis, we can find patients with HBV and Schistosoma mansoni co-infection, a fact that can have repercussions in a worse clinical outcome, including HCC. However, related studies are still scarce. This article presents a clinical case of a 43-year-old patient with HBV and S. mansoni infection who, despite not being cirrhotic and undergoing regular treatment with Tenofovir, had a low viral load and normal aminotransferases, evolved with HCC.
