Is physiotherapy effective for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease? Systematic review

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of Peyronie's disease so far is not specific, however the literature shows different therapeutic options, one of which is physical therapy. Thus, based on the premise that physiotherapy can be a powerfull ally to conservative treatment in Peyronie's disease, it is necessary to carry out this systematic review, aiming to highlight the role of physiotherapy in the treatment of Peyronie's disease and its complications. METHOD: Systematic review (SR) based on the flowchart of the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses” (PRISMA). Free access articles were included, regardless of language and publication period, through the VHL, CINAHL, Google Scholar, PeDro, Pubmed, Science Direct, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The searches were performed using the Association of Health Descriptors and the Boolean operators “OR” and “AND”. RESULTS: 473 studies were identified, of which only four were accepted and integrated into this SR. Based on the research carried out, it was possible to identify that the most used interventions were: shock waves with parameters 3,000 and 2,000 impulses and with frequencies of 3 and 4 Hz and capacitive and resistive energy transfer that were distributed energy of 45% W for treatment capacitive and 40% W in resistive mode. CONCLUSION: Physiotherapy and its resources proved to be beneficial in the treatment of Peyronie's disease about pain, but did not present satisfactory results about penile fibrotic curvature and erectile dysfunction.
