State selectivity in core ionization of methane
A clear experimental signature of the population of the lowest triplet state <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mmultiscripts><a:mi>T</a:mi><a:mn>1</a:mn><a:none/><a:mprescripts/><a:none/><a:mn>3</a:mn></a:mmultiscripts></a:math> of the methane dication is identified in a photoionization experiment. This state is populated only in valence ionization and is absent when the dication is formed by core ionization followed by Auger-Meitner decay. For valence ionization, the total internal energy of the <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><b:msubsup><b:mi>CH</b:mi><b:mn>3</b:mn><b:mo>+</b:mo></b:msubsup></b:math> fragment, formed during the deprotonation of <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><c:mrow><c:msub><c:mi>CH</c:mi><c:mn>4</c:mn></c:msub><c:msup><c:mrow/><c:mrow><c:mn>2</c:mn><c:mo>+</c:mo></c:mrow></c:msup></c:mrow></c:math>, is evaluated. Notably, the distribution of this internal energy peaks at the same value regardless of the initially populated electronic state of <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><d:mrow><d:msub><d:mi>CH</d:mi><d:mn>4</d:mn></d:msub><d:msup><d:mrow/><d:mrow><d:mn>2</d:mn><d:mo>+</d:mo></d:mrow></d:msup></d:mrow></d:math>. We find that excited electronic states of <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><e:msubsup><e:mi>CH</e:mi><e:mn>3</e:mn><e:mo>+</e:mo></e:msubsup></e:math> are predominantly populated with significant rovibrational excitation.
