Diagnostic imaging and management of penetrating wounds of the foot
Summary Penetrating foot injuries in horses pose significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly when deeper synovial structures are involved. A systematic approach to diagnostic imaging and early and aggressive management is essential to achieve a good outcome. While superficial wounds may resolve with conservative treatment, deeper injuries carry a high risk of complications, including osteomyelitis and synovial sepsis. Radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) play a crucial role in assessing the extent of injury and guiding treatment decisions. This commentary reviews progressive clinical approaches for diagnostic imaging and management of penetrating solar wounds in the horse.
