Modelling and Synthesis of a Ring Oscillator Based True Random Number Generator using Opensource EDA Tools
This work presents the modelling and synthesis of a robust True Random Number Generator (TRNG) through the use of ring oscillators. By employing ring oscillators with alternating lengths, the design effectively exploits natural jitter and unpredictability in oscillation frequencies to generate truly random sequences. The development process encompasses a comprehensive digital design flow, including designing, functional verification, synthesis, place and route (PnR), and static timing analysis (STA). The implemented TRNG successfully overcomes the predictability limitations associated with deterministic Pseudo-Random Number Generators (PRNGs), providing enhanced security and reliability for modern computational systems. Additionally, the utilization of open-source Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools not only reduces development costs but also promotes collaborative innovation within the engineering community. By overcoming limitations associated with traditional pseudo-random number generators, the proposed TRNG design addresses the growing need for secure and unpredictable random sequences in modern computational systems.
