IoT-Enabled Solutions for Efficient Irrigation in Remote Agricultural Villages

The analysis of various irrigation methods and an improvised automatic irrigation method is employed in a small agricultural village named Watrap located in Viruthunagar district, Tamil Nadu, India. This village depends on agriculture as the main source of employment and income. Most of the irrigation in the study area depends on Well irrigation. The availability of water is abundant during July to November and minimum during the other months. So, the conservation and proper utilization of water and the supply of water to the agricultural lands in an appropriate portion is the main task of the proposed work. Different crops need different proportions of water in their growing period. In our study area, the main crop grown is paddy. Currently, the farmer will visit the land and according to the temperature and the soil water content, the crops are watered. This method is inaccurate and it needs manpower for the irrigation process. Here, an automatic soil parameter measuring instrument is designed and the water need is satisfied accordingly. The main parameters of the irrigation process are pH, moisture content, temperature, and humidity. An extra parameter of water level measurement is used to monitor the water level in nearby well. The study area is well remote place and the proposed system is powered using the renewable solar energy.
