A simulation-based approach for optimized linear switched reluctance motor performance through material selection for core design

Abstract Linear-switched reluctance motors (LSRMs) are becoming popular for transit applications owing to their inherent advantages. However, structural modifications are crucial for mitigating the drawbacks of high-force ripples and acoustic noise. Analysing the effect of every modification requires designing the motor using machine design software. In the LSRM design process, in addition to calculating the physical dimensions, selecting suitable material for the core greatly impacts the motor performance. This study presents a step-by-step guide to the material selection process, for designing LSRM’s stator and translator cores of an LSRM. A detailed performance analysis of the LSRM was conducted using eleven different materials to determine the most suitable core material. The ANSYS/Maxwell software was used to simulate the motor design. Material selection is based on key performance parameters such as propulsion force, flux distribution, phase inductance profile, and material cost. The results confirm the suitability of steel1008 as compared to other materials.
