Adaptive Reconfigurable Battery Pack Employing Switching Matrix Circuit to Maximize the Capacity of the Battery Bank

In this article, a reconfigurable battery pack is proposed to enhance the performance of the battery pack for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The SoC mismatches between the battery cells in the battery pack will limit the capacity utilization. This proposed system employs a MOSFET based switching matrix circuit (SMC) to reconfigure the battery pack based on its present state of charge (SoC) to mitigate the SoC mismatches between the battery cells in the battery pack. The adaptive part of the battery cells will balance the fixed part of the pack with the proposed SMC system. This technique will maximize the capacity utilization of the battery pack under the mismatching SoC level while charging. The proposed system is validated in the MATLAB / SIMULINK platform for the battery pack size of 4 × 4 which consists of 16 battery cells with a total capacity of 176 Wh. The proposed achieves the maximum capacity of 97.7%.
