Design and Testing of Coordinated Controller for PV Assisted Municipal Solid Waste Fueled EV Charging Station
This paper presents a PV assisted, energy-efficient electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) powered by hybrid energy sources in a grid-connected mode. The EVCS facility is equipped with a bi-directional AC/DC converter for interfacing with the distribution grid, a dual active bridge (DAB) converter for EV charging, and a multi-phase interleaved boost converter for rooftop solar panels. An energy recovery technique is used for municipal solid waste energy conversion plants coupled with a turbine genset to supply power as a main source to the EVCS which reduces the grid power dependency for EV charging. The syn gas-operated turbine coupled with a salient pole wound field synchronous generator controlled through a converter-fed to extract generated power. A coordinated controller is implemented considering power generation, and intermittency of photovoltaic (PV) to maintain the power availability at the charging facility and also to limit the charging power requirement from the grid. The test cases are developed to evaluate the EVCS effectiveness and performance of the proposed control algorithm in a common DC bus. EVs of different battery capacities with different states of charge are modeled in MATLAB/Simulink 2023b.
