Disrupting Agri-Supply Chains: The Role of Blockchain in Quality Control and Traceability

Blockchain technology has enormous potential to enhance the quality monitoring of agricultural supply chains. As such, this paper explores how blockchain is poised to overcome critical agri-supply chain issues like inefficiencies and lack of traceability, common with old systems. Utilizing blockchain—a distributed and immutable ledger that records every transaction and movement throughout the supply chain, ensuring transparency and security of data. This provides a clear and traceable record of produce from the farm to the dinner table of the customer. Core attributes, such as smart contracts, enable the automation of quality assurance processes, thus ensuring adherence to regulations while minimizing manual scrutiny. Blockchain also allows consumers to have access to detailed information of the origin, quality, and journey of agricultural products, thus instilling trust and confidence. The text also shares examples of how blockchain can be practically applied in agri-supply chains to enhance efficiency and trust between stakeholders. The future of blockchain in agriculture, including possible solutions, challenges and limits of its implementation, is also explored in this paper. Highlighting how it can facilitate transparency, execution of quality assurances and improvement of stakeholder relationships, this paper illustrates blockchain's game-changing capability to improve the factuality and efficiency of agricultural systems.
