Modular Three-Phase Matrix-Based Single-Stage High-Frequency Link Bidirectional PFC Converter for EV Charging

This paper presents a novel modular three-phase matrix-based single-stage isolated high-frequency link (HFL) bidirectional AC/DC power factor correction (PFC) converter for fast EV charging applications. The proposed configuration consists of current-fed matrix converter (CFMC) with each of three-phases at AC side and the three-phase full-bridge converter at DC side via HFL, which is an optimal choice for a single-stage with galvanically isolated for EV charging application. The proposed soft-switching modulation technique attains zero current switching (ZCS) at AC-side switches and zero current turn-on at DC-side devices without active clamp or snubber circuit, which results into significantly reduced the switching losses, hardware, and cost. The implemented control method and novel modulation method ensure bidirectional power flow throughout operation with soft-switching technique. The paper demonstrates the steady-state operation and analysis, simulation results using Altair PSIM 11, and hardware experimental results.
