Enhanced Power Management in a DC Microgrid Through Virtual Inertia Integration

This study explores virtual inertia-based power management in a grid-connected DC microgrid (DCMG) system. DCMG is formed of solar and wind-based renewable energy sources (RESs), electric vehicles (EV) as energy storage systems, a three-phase conventional grid, and a constant power load. There are numerous advantages of DCMG, however, it encounters obstacles like precise power distribution and voltage regulation of the DC bus. Additionally, RESs and EVs make use of power electronic converters, which result in decreased inertia support out of the DCMG system. Thus, in addition to DC bus voltage stabilisation, this work proposes a virtual inertia control technique for a bi-directional DC-DC converter in DCMG that attempts to increase inertia and regulate an EV's charge and discharge power as a function of its state-of-charge. A simulation-based experiment is conducted to evaluate the performance of the studied control strategy.
