Enhancing Web Traffic Security: A Deep Learning Approach to Defend Against Traffic Analysis Attack
Website fingerprinting raises a more significant threat to privacy since it can break even encryptions and other security provisions to disclose the visited websites. This research paper investigates the use of deep learning capabilities as a security measure against such attacks. The research starts by introducing the nature of website fingerprinting, where the adversaries analyze encrypted traffic patterns to infer the visited websites. Traditional defense mechanisms, such as random padding and traffic morphing, have several drawbacks, including high overhead and lower efficiency against modern advanced fingerprinting techniques. The deep learning-based approach developed in this paper uses convolutional neural networks and hybrid CNN-LSTM models to detect and prevent such attacks. Experimental results prove the high efficiency of deep learning models over the traditional approaches, which achieve high accuracy, precision, and recall while keeping the false positive rate very low. We now further describe potential challenges, including generalization to new attack types, scalability, and susceptibility to adversarial attacks. Taken together, these results suggest deep learning is a plausible, adaptive approach to the problem of scaling-up user privacy in light of evolving web fingerprinting threats—one that could benefit other domains in the broad field of cybersecurity. This research contributes to the increasing efforts made to protect one's privacy online in a new digital environment, which is evidently more predisposed to surveillance.
