An Improved Model Predictive Current Control for Medium-Voltage Motor Drives

High current ripple leads to higher torque ripple in medium-voltage (MV) motor drive systems, and poses significant drawbacks like accelerated vibration and noise, increased wear and tear, and poor efficiency. This paper introduces an improved model predictive current control (MPCC) strategy to minimize the current ripple, thereby reducing torque ripple in multilevel inverter (MLI) fed MV motor drives. In the proposed method, the corrector stage is incorporated to enhance the prediction process, thus effectively minimizing computational errors. This approach further improves current harmonic performance and lowers flying capacitor (FC) ripples, leading to reduced torque fluctuations. To validate the efficacy of the proposed MPCC, simulation studies are conducted on a four-level inverter fed MV motor drive and its performance is compared with the conventional MPCC method.
