Voltage Stabilization of a SEIG-Based Micro-Hydro System Using Static Synchronous Series Compensator

The Self-Excited Induction Generator's (SEIG) voltage regulation degrades with increased loading. This article attempts to use a battery-supported static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to construct, simulate, and enhance the SEIG performance. The compensator used is a series operated, IGBT based voltage-controlled voltage source converters (VC-VSC), which is sinusoidal pulse width modulation (PWM) operated. The performance of SSSC is faster and accurate than that of the series capacitor approach. The SEIG modeling was done using a d-q reference frame. A decoupled control strategy is developed for the SSSC to manage the power flow between the SEIG and load. The evaluation of the harmonic spectra of the generator and load side voltage and current is another technique used to evaluate the power quality of the SEIG-SSSC system, which is done in this work. The entire model is developed using Matlab/Simulink environment and verified using OPAL-RT 4510 simulator.
