Detection of Wind Turbine Induced Forced Oscillations using Periodogram and DEF Techniques

This paper presents a comprehensive method for forced oscillation (FO) source identification on wind turbine system (WTS) integrated 4-generator 11-bus power system. Identifying FOs, especially those originating from wind turbines, is essential due to their potential to introduce variability and instability into the power grid. These periodic disturbances can arise from WTS due to various reasons, including aerodynamic forces, mechanical imbalances within the turbines, and control system malfunctions. The proposed methodology utilizes the periodogram method to evaluate the FO frequency. PMU data is then filtered based on this estimated frequency. To accurately pinpoint the location of the FO sources, the Dissipating Energy Flow (DEF) technique is subsequently applied to the filtered signal. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is rigorously evaluated through multiple scenarios, demonstrating that the DEF technique can precisely and reliably identify the origin of FOs, even when they are generated by wind turbine systems (WTS).
