Enhanced Direct Torque Control Strategies for In-Wheel Switched Reluctance Motors: Evaluating Sector and Voltage Vector Selection Techniques

In-wheel switched reluctance motors (IWSRMs) hold significant promise for the future of electric vehicles (EVs) due to their integration, which saves space, reduces overall vehicle weight, and enables more efficient packaging of the drivetrain components. In future autonomous vehicles, IWSRMs align well with the goals of enhanced efficiency, performance, and autonomy. The main challenge in IWSRMs is precise torque control and torque ripple issues. Therefore, this paper proposes enhanced direct torque control strategies to mitigate the torque ripples. To evaluate the performance of different voltage vector selection strategies using metrics such as torque ripple, flux ripple, current harmonics, and efficiency, this model designed 16/12 IWSRMs using finite element analysis. The developed mathematical model implemented different DTC techniques and strategies using MATLAB/Simulation. The performance analyzed motor drives in different drive conditions. Hardware-in-loop simulation enables real-time testing of DTC algorithms by interfacing with physical hardware emulators. The real-time hardware experimental analysis with WAVECT controller, using model-based design to reduce system complexity and mitigate the torque ripple effectively.
