Performance Comparison of IEEE 802.11p and IEEE 802.11bd for Advanced V2X Applications

The rapid advancement of cooperative automated driving and the communication of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technologies have prompted in need for next-generation wireless standards. IEEE 802.11bd, designed as the successor to IEEE 802.11p, integrates key features such as dual carrier modulation, high-density midambles, and range extension to meet high demands for increased data rates, extended communication range, and enhanced reliability. This paper presents a detail difference within IEEE 802.11p, IEEE 802.11bd, focusing on three essential metrics: throughput, communication range, and packet reception ratio (PRR). PRR, a critical indicator of communication reliability, measures the percentage of successfully received packets over a given period. Simulation-based evaluations of these metrics show that IEEE 802.11bd significantly enhances performance than IEEE 802.11p, mainly when compared with the data transmission efficiency and reliability. Here results highlight the advantages of IEEE 802.11bd in modern V2X applications, where faster and more reliable communication is essential for enabling cooperative driving systems. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of PRR in evaluating communication standards, as it reflects both the reliability and consistency of data transmission in varying conditions. Our analysis provides deeper insights into the key benefits of adopting IEEE 802.11bd for future vehicular communication systems. Overall, IEEE 802.11bd offers superior capabilities over IEEE 802.11p, making it a more viable solution to reach the rigid necessities of upcoming V2X applications, including those in cooperative automated driving environments.
