Maximum Torque per Ampere Control of Interior PMSM and BLDC Motor Using Co-Simulation

This paper presents a comparative study of the control performances of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and surface-mounted brushless dc (SM BLDC) motor drives using co-simulation. The 2-D finite element (FE) model of both the motors are modelled using the Simcenter MagNet software, and the control strategies are implemented using MATLAB/Simulink. A field-oriented control (FOC) with the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) technique for an interior PMSM and a simple hysteresis current control for a BLDC motor are implemented using co-simulations. An interface block from MagNet software is used to link the motor models with the drive control scheme developed in MATLAB/Simulink. It is claimed that, for the co-simulations a complex look-up table for calculations of inductance considering the non-linearities of the material is not required. Further, the results obtained from co-simulations of both motors are compared and presented. From the simulations, it is concluded that, though time-consuming, the accuracy of the co-simulations is higher compared to a complete motor and drive model developed in MATLAB/Simulink.
