A Smart Control for Multi-Functional 3P4W Grid Interfaced PV-BES System

In this paper, control algorithm for robust variable step size-least mean square (RVSS-LMS) adaptive filter is designed and put to use for solar photo voltaic (PV)-three-phase, four-wire, grid-interfaced system. Such a system is powered by a hybrid combination of PV and an optimum sized battery. The controller aims to operate the system so as to inject the surplus power obtained (after catering to loads) as an active power to the utility mains. Therefore, the voltage source converter (VSC) in the grid interfaced solar energy conversion system also operates as a distribution static compensator. As a result, harmonic currents appearing in the utility neutral line gets eliminated and power quality indices on the AC mains side are improved. RVSS-LMS algorithm extracts the active weight component of load currents from non-linear loads connected at the point of common coupling. System performance using proposed RVSS-LMS algorithm, is also compared with conventional state-of-art adaptive filter algorithms. The system is realised in MATLAB environment in discrete time frame using simulink and sim power system toolboxes. Observed results demonstrate superiority in system performance using RVSS-LMS filter. The total harmonic distortion of grid current is observed within 5% which is in coherence with IEEE-519.
