Synchronised IPMSM Drive Operation for EVs Over Complete Speed Range

This paper presents an analysis of the Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) drive in the complete speed range operation for Electrical Vehicle (EV) applications. Complete speed range operation of an IPMSM drive under the best efficiency would be based on Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA), Maximum Torque per Volt (MTPV) and flux weakening operation. Based on the operating constraints for these modes, a new method has been proposed for adapting the suitable operation based on EV and motor requirements. Unlike the conventional approaches, a state transition method for complete speed range operation of the IPMSM drive for EV application has been proposed. Transitions between various states of IPMSM operation and iterative methods for respective state operations have been discussed. IPMSM drive control with the proposed method has been simulated and verified through hardware implementation.
