Modelling of Cross-Saturation in a PMa-SyRM Using Emperical Polynomial Reduction Method

The impact of cross-saturation effects on the performance of a permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance motor (PMa-SyRM) is investigated in this paper. Usually finite element (FE) analysis is used to model the effects of non-linearity due to core saturation. However, FE analysis is very time consuming, especially when modelling SyRMs due to a large number of FE meshes and nodes at the rotor ribs. Therefore, a MATLAB-based model incorporating the effects of non-linearity is presented in this paper. The model takes into account the cross-saturation effects using a polynomial reduction method. Further, from the simulations, the non-linear inductance variation due to the cross-coupling and saturation effects are presented. It is found that there is a reduction of 34.6 % rated torque in the proposed MATLAB-based model considering the cross-saturation effect.
