Reconfigurable Wide Voltage Range Battery Charger for Electric Transportation Applications
Existing electric vehicle (EV) battery chargers are currently facing significant challenges when it comes to operating across wide voltage ranges. The complexity arises from the diverse battery voltage architectures present in different EV models and existing chargers often lack the flexibility needed to adjust to these varying voltages effectively, leading to compatibility issues during the charging process. Through this paper, a new reconfigurable wide output voltage range battery charger for EV battery charging is proposed. The charger's ability to reconfigure over the wide voltage range of 250–1000 V with decreased voltage and current stress on switches makes it suitable for public EV battery charging applications. A new current control technique using a proportional resonant (PR) controller is designed, which maintains the unity power factor (UPF) with attenuation of lower-order harmonics in the input current. MATLAB/Simulink simulations are done in order to verify the performance of the proposed charger.
