Model Predictive Control of Solar PV and Battery Converters Using Droop Control
This paper presents a droop control based finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) of a hybrid energy system. The hybrid energy system consists of a solar photovoltaic (PV) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) connected to a DC bus. The droop control is designed to control DC bus voltage depending on the state of charge (SoC) of BESS and load. When the BESS is not fully charged, the BESS converter regulates the DC bus voltage, while the PV converter operates at maximum power point tracking (MPPT). In case of BESS is fully charged and MPPT power is greater than load power, the PV converter regulates the DC bus voltage considering <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$I-V$</tex> droop control. The proposed method provides good transient response to load power variation for single stage DC-DC converter. The simulation studies are performed in MATLAB/Simulink to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
