A Design Procedure for Double Stator Axial Flux Switched Reluctance Motor
Conventional design methods of a double stator axial flux switched reluctance motor (DS-AFSRM) decides the number of turns in stator winding based on the specific electric loading which is an arbitrary choice of the designer. This affects the stator phase inductance values and the slope of inductance profile with respect to rotor position. This paper proposes a design method for DS-AFSRM in which, slope of inductance profile with respect to rotor position is used as a critical design parameter and it is calculated from target specifications of motor. The number of turns of stator winding are designed based on this critical parameter. An analytical model to evaluate stator phase inductance is developed for DS-AFSRM. Based on the proposed design method and the developed analytical model of stator phase inductance, a 5 HP, 120 Volts, 6/4 DS-AFSRM is designed and it is validated using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) platform and MATLAB software.
