Three-Phase Interleaved Bidirectional Resonant Converter for Charging / Discharging Infrastructure
The introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) has caused the transportation sector to shift from conventional gasoline-based energy to an electricity-based energy solution. However, in order to optimize the charging cost, localization of electricity generation using renewable sources such as solar and wind energy and microgrid-based charging stations is essential. In order to charge different segments of EVs, different voltage and current ratings are required. This article presents a three-phase interleaved bidirectional resonant converter (TPIBRC) with the capability of power flow in both the directions. The interleaving of the resonant converter reduces ripple current, and splitting into multiphase reduces the peak current of the converter. The converter is designed for charging / discharging a three-wheeler 72V battery pack using a 360V dc bus. A control methodology is developed for implementing pulse width modulation and frequency modulation to regulate the output power and voltage for TPIBRC. The simulation results have been presented with ZVS soft switching for a variation of input voltage from 350V to 370V.
