A Three-Winding Based Triple Active Bridge Converter for Multipurpose Electric Vehicle Charger
Electric vehicles (EVs) have zero emissions only if the batteries are charged by renewable energy sources. These days, a smart micro-grid is connected to the main grid and different types of renewable energy sources (such as solar, wind, and other energy sources) to reduce the load demand in peak times. Such a system enhances the quality of electricity, promotes renewable energy, and prevents pollution of the environment. Therefore, to balance and regulate power flows among renewable energy sources, electric vehicles (EVs), and the grid, an isolated hybrid multi-port converter is needed to charge EVs from a smart micro grid. A novel isolated multi-port triple active bridge (TAB) converter with multidirectional power flow control is proposed which is validated using PLECS Simulink-based platform. In this system, the solar PV operates at maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and continuously develops maximum power without a dedicated boost converter for MPPT. The PLECS/Simulink software environment is used to model the EV charger. A comprehensive discussion covering the modeling, implementation, and results is provided in this paper.
