Antimicrobial Activity of Homeopathic Dilutions of Gun Powder 6C and 30C against Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract Some scientists and celebrities have labeled homeopathy as pseudoscience due to a dearth of fundamental data supporting the efficacy of homeopathic medicines. The majority of homeopathic physicians feel that clinical trials will suffice for homeopathy research. However, the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of homeopathic medicines cannot be elicited by clinical trials; these questions may be addressed by basic research investigations on homeopathic medications. The aim of this study was to explore the antimicrobial activity of homeopathic preparation of Gun powder 6C & 30C through microdilution and disk diffusion assays. The antimicrobial activity of Gun powder 6C & 30C is evaluated through a microdilution assay followed by the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion (KBDD) method according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSIM44-A) with slight modifications. The diameter of the zone of inhibition was measured along with 91% ethanol as negative controls and gentamycin as positive control. This study was repeated three times to check the accuracy and reliability. The mean and standard deviation of optical density of Gun powder 6C & 30C in 10 µL show a lesser value than ethanol. Gun powder 6C & 30C exhibited significant results against S. aureus after appropriate statistical analysis. The zone of inhibition of Gun powder 6C against Staphylococcus is 25.33 ± 4.16 mm and that of Gun powder 30C is 23.33 ± 3.06. The positive control (gentamycin 10 μg) showed a mean zone of inhibition of 36.33 ± 3.06 and the negative control (91% ethanol) showed a mean zone of inhibition of 6 ± 0.00. Microdilution and disk diffusion assays indicate that Gun powder 6C & 30C are most potent against S. aureus disorders caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The study suggested that Homoeopathic preparation of Gun powder 6C & 30C is most potent against Staphylococcus aureus disorders caused by antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Hence, Gun powder 6C & 30C may be used as novel, potential drug for antimicrobial resistance disorders which may be less cost effective than current antibiotic treatment.
