Mixed-Anion (Cl + I) Sodalites for Immobilization of Halide Radioisotopes

Sodalite is an aluminosilicate framework that can be used for the immobilization of radioactive chlorine and iodine. In this study, three series of mixed sodalite samples, Na8(AlSiO4)6Clx(H3O2)2–x, Na8(AlSiO4)6Ix(H3O2)2–x, and Na8(AlSiO4)6ClxI2–x, with 0 ≤ x < 2, were synthesized hydrothermally. Pairwise anion selectivity between I/OH (or H3O2–), Cl/OH, and I/Cl during sodalite formation is discussed. Different Na environments and the characteristics of specific anions in sodalites were investigated by using 23Na magic angle spinning–nuclear magnetic resonance along with X-ray diffraction. A density functional theory study was also performed to compare the structural properties of iodosodalite and chlorosodalite. Thermal stabilities were measured and compared by performing thermogravimetric analysis.
