A Method for Determining Elastic Constants of Materials Using Acoustoelastic Effect and Prism Technique

The acoustoelastic effect is widely used in non-destructive characterization and material performance research. This paper presents a new method for measuring the second and third order elastic constants of homogeneous material utilizing the acoustoelastic effect and the prism technique. First, the prism technique was used to calculate the lamé’s constants in prismatic aluminum material in free stress. Then, a mathematical model was proposed to represent each ultrasonic echoes with five parameters. The model was tested on prismatic aluminum specimens under uniaxial compressive stress, where longitudinal and shear wave velocities were recorded and analyzed. An experimental set-up has been carried out to show the performance of the proposed method in estimating second and third elastic constants. The results demonstrated significant sensitivity of wave parameters to stress variations, offering a reliable approach for material characterization and enabling highly accurate acoustoelastic constants measurement.
