Advancing precision medicine: strategies from organoids research
Organoids-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip: innovations in drug development and precision medicineThe convergence of organoids-on-a-chip and organ-on-a-chip technologies represents a significant advancement in biopharmaceutical research, offering unprecedented opportunities for drug development and precision medicine. These technologies are at the forefront of biopharmaceutical innovation, addressing critical needs in public health and life safety. As recognized in the 13th Five-Year Plan and National Medium and Long Development Plan, biopharmaceuticals are strategic scientific and technological fields as well as strategic industries.During the meeting, Dr. Li and Dr. Liang explored the current state, applications, and future trends of these technologies. Organoids-on-a-chip and bionic microsystemsOrganoids-on-a-chip and bionic microsystems represent the integration of organoids and organ-on-a-chip technologies, allowing for a better recapitulation of organ structures, microenvironments, and functions in vitro [1] .These technologies enable the construction of highly biomimetic in vitro models, which are crucial for the future direction of the field. For pharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organizations (CROs), organoids/organ-on-a-chip models offer substantial advantages in drug screening, drug metabolism, and safety assessment [2] .Furthermore, patient-derived organoids/organ-on-achip models can be used for drug sensitivity evaluation, aiding clinicians in planning and designing personalized treatment plans, which is of significant value to precision medicine [3] .The market demand for organoids/organ-on-a-chip models in biopharmaceutical research and development is vast. However, current research on organoids/organ-on-a-chips is still in its early stages, with expectations for significant breakthroughs in some core and key technologies. Most developed organoids/organ-on-achips are still in their infancy and require iterative optimization.Research resources are fragmented, and although numerous startups both internationally and domestically are promoting the industrial transformation of this technology, significant progress
