Treating gambling disorder using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation with symptom provocation

Abstract
This case report explores the use of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for treating gambling disorder. A young man with gambling disorder and comorbid depression underwent high-frequency rTMS over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, along with concurrent symptom provocation. After 24 sessions of rTMS, significant improvements in gambling-related urge and behaviors, as well as mood symptoms, were observed. These findings suggest that the efficacy of rTMS for gambling disorder may be enhanced via symptom provocation, highlighting the need for controlled studies to examine its additional benefits and to establish a standardized treatment procedure.
