A Multiple Case Study of Empathic Communication Strategies in Teaching-Learning Situations

Objectives This study explores the educational implications of empathic communication strategies for school education through a multiple case study using previous studies that used empathic communication strategies in teaching-learning situations. Methods Yin's multiple case study method was used. The analysis case collection procedure consists of three stages, and a total of 10 domestic analysis cases directly related to the research topic and derivation of results were collected. The analysis cases were subjected to an inductive content analysis procedure, and the research results were subjected to a triangulation verification method. Results Empathic communication strategies used in teaching-learning situations are largely divided into four areas: ‘cognitive communication’, ‘emotional communication’, ‘attitudinal communication’, and ‘mutual respect communication’ strategies. The above empathic communication strategies were confirmed to provide educational implications for school education, such as ‘improving self-regulation capacity and prosocial tendencies’, ‘securing class interest and class attitudes and resolving conflicts in class situations’, and ‘expanding students’ experiences’. Conclusions First, in classes where empathic communication strategies are applied, class members build trust and resolve conflicts, thereby forming positive interpersonal relationships. Second, empathic communication strategies can make students interested in classes and resolve conflicts in class attitudes and situations. This study not only explores the educational implications of empathic communication strategies used in teaching-learning situations for school education, but also contributes to the development of learner-centered education. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it derives educational implications for Korean education through the analysis of domestic multiple case studies. It has value as basic research data for researchers and professors in the field of teaching-learning to practice and conduct research on empathic communication strategies in various contexts.
