Integrating Production and Corrosion Monitoring in Unconventional Environment Getting Conclusive Investigation of Lower Completion Status Unleashing the Full Potential Through Advanced Logging Techniques
Abstract This paper describes leak detection and analysis in complex reservoirs and challenging environments in a green field "S" using multiple diagnostic tools. Most of the wells are laterals with Inflow Control Devices (ICDs) and swell packers in lower completions across heterogeneous carbonate reservoirs. Highly corrosive environments (up to 20% H2S) poses an added risk to maintain the completion integrity. Leak detection and analysis requires a multi-disciplinary surveillance approach where an integration of stakeholders such as geoscience and petroleum engineering to ensure productivity is maximized during the complete life of the field. In this paper, couple of pilot wells have been discussed where a methodical approach was used. This approach consists of a baseline advanced production logging and corrosion evaluation techniques using a combination of high-resolution multi-finger caliper tool and an electromagnetic tool in lower completion for assessment of the well performance and identification of the source of oil leak. Additionally, corrosion logging using the high-resolution multi-finger caliper tool in upper completion was done to confirm the tubular integrity. This case study integrates and correlates downhole zonal contribution, holdups, pressure and temperature from advanced production logging with maximum penetrations from the high-resolution multi-finger caliper tool and metal loss from the electromagnetic tool. Production logging data gave an initial indication of possible leak whereas the multi-finger caliper data confirmed the leak points. The electromagnetic tool data provided an added advantage to differentiate between internal and external corrosion. Moreover, a time-lapse analysis was done for one of the wells using the multi-finger caliper data acquired three years ago in upper and lower completions. The analysis depicted similar penetration trends across both datasets along with notable increase in maximum penetrations in the latest acquired data. Overall, all diagnostic tools served the purpose to obtain valuable insights of the completion integrity. This case study shows that by applying a multi-disciplinary approach and integrating various measurements allows us to view the entire picture rather than a piece of the puzzle. Time-lapse monitoring of production and corrosion logs are necessary to make informed decisions towards better field development and detection of anomalies.
