Research on Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage in Drilling and Completion Engineering

Abstract Under the framework of the "dual carbon" strategy (Carbon peaking and Carbon neutrality), the integration of carbon dioxide (CO2)-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and geological storage offers a promising pathway for achieving green and sustainable development. As CO2 emissions rise, they exacerbate the greenhouse effect and related environmental challenges. Globally, CO2 EOR technology is widely utilized, leveraging subsurface CO2 storage to enhance crude oil recovery rates. However, this process introduces significant risks, particularly casing corrosion in downhole environments. This study aims to systematically assess casing integrity and corrosion risks associated with CO2 injection in oil recovery operations. The research approach includes: analyzing casing failure mechanisms in CO2 EOR processes; conducting T95 coupon corrosion experiments to evaluate the corrosive effects of CO2 on casing materials; elucidating the underlying corrosion mechanisms induced by CO2; and investigating the mechanical loads and strength factors impacting casing performance during production. By employing fault tree analysis and Bayesian network methods, this work evaluates the probability of casing failure and ranks the risk levels of various contributing factors. The outcomes facilitate a comprehensive assessment of casing integrity in CO2 EOR wells, alongside proposing effective preventive and mitigation strategies for casing failure.Looking ahead, optimizing the balance between CO2 EOR technology and geological storage will be paramount. Achieving such a balance can ensure a development model that integrates both safety and economic viability.
