Breaking Down Silos: LLM/API Driven Experience Management Tool for Well Construction
Abstract This article introduces a cutting-edge experience management application designed to revolutionize the way lessons learned are captured, stored, and shared during the well construction process. Unlike conventional tools, this application is purpose-built for engineers, supporting every aspect of offset well analysis from planning through execution. It integrates with relevant global data sources in a seamless manner, minimizing the time spent on metadata entry while enhancing significant operational efficiency. One of the main differentiators of the application is that it provides the option to capture both positive and negative experiences. Conceived in 2022 and deployed globally by 2024 with much success, the application incorporates advanced technologies to transform the lessons learned process. A standout feature is its integration of a Large Language Model (LLM) and gamification techniques to enrich user engagement. These innovations help users improve their access to critical insights and gain relevant, actionable knowledge that drives continuous improvement and operational excellence. This application marks a significant leap forward in knowledge management for the oil and gas industry. Traditionally, vital operational knowledge is locked away in scattered documents and spreadsheets, limiting accessibility and collaborative learning. By contrast, this centralized, cloud-native solution harnesses the power of LLMs to capture, organize, and disseminate valuable experiences. Built with interoperability as a core principle, the application features robust Application Programming Interface (API) connections and adheres to Open Subsurface Data Universe (OSDU) standards, ensuring seamless data exchange within the broader digital ecosystem. The application leverages OpenAI services for crucial LLM tasks, including automated translation of experiences, natural language-based search, and recommendation of relevant information during documentation. This facilitates knowledge sharing across global teams and breaks down language barriers. Furthermore, the application provides AI-powered guidance and suggestions to users, enhancing the quality and consistency of documented experiences. These AI-powered capabilities empower users with guidance and suggestions, elevating the quality and consistency of documented experiences. The result is a powerful tool that transcends language barriers and unlocks the full potential of organizational knowledge. Looking ahead, the application's roadmap is focused on: Enhanced Connectivity: Integration with diverse data sources, such as Daily Drilling Reports (DDRs) and End of Well Reports (EOWRs), to provide enriched context and deeper analysis. Expanded AI Capabilities: Scaling experience management with advanced AI functionalities for personalized learning and richer insights. This paper demonstrates how the newly developed application empowers engineers and field personnel to capture, share, and learn from critical operational experiences. By driving continuous improvement, enhancing operational efficiency, and enabling informed decision-making, this application is poised to become an indispensable tool for the oil and gas industry.
