Reservoir Characterization of First EOR Project in an Offshore Giant Field: A Pilot Study in Gulf of Suez, Egypt
Abstract The potential for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in offshore oil fields has attracted considerable attention due to the vast volumes of recoverable hydrocarbons still untapped. In the Gulf of Suez, the Kareem reservoir, a mature water flooded formation, contains 90% of the field's original oil in place (OOIP). However, the reservoir's complex lithology and pronounced permeability heterogeneity present significant challenges for sustaining traditional water flooding operations. A new 3D geological model is constructed to reflect depositional facies complexity using core and log character recognition, allowing for the confident distribution of facies with the existing high well density. This study presents the first application of a hybrid EOR method—combining polymer flooding and designed low-salinity water injection—targeted at unlocking additional recovery in the largest offshore Miocene sandstone reservoir in the region. Analyses production and injection history data from 57 years of production from south Morgan sector model, covering selected area of the field and utilizing 48 years of sea water (low saline water) injection. The numerical sector model for total fluid rate is applied for history matching. The simulation study has successfully developed a robust dynamic model that replicates the key historical events and current reservoir conditions. The evaluation of the potential of polymer and low-salinity water injection within the defined sector model shows more impact in areas of by-passed oil around well-256 and well-33, using well-148 as polymer / Low salinity injector. The current paper emphases on the geological perspective and the initial results EOR polymer / Low salinity dynamic part.
