An Analytical Approach to Analyse Information, Identify Challenges and Device Solutions (AID) in a Mature Field to Address Production Decline
Abstract Mature fields typically bring production challenges that generate significant hurdles downhole, potentially impact well integrity, add difficulties to manage unwanted fluids and solids at surface, and increase emissions. Most of the time, the amount of information to process is vast that leads to longer time for solutioning. The methodical AID approach was implemented for diagnosing and grouping the wells according to the challenges and identifying potential solutions in a timely manner. In this study, sandstone reservoirs are being produced from vertical and deviated wells with water injection development strategy. Although, this strategy was improving hydrocarbon sweep efficiency and maintaining pressure support, it was also bringing production challenges: sand production and fluid lifting issues in the wellbore. The AID workflow helped to identify whether the injected water was arriving to the producers dragging the sand particles along with it, and if this water production considerably decreased the gas lift efficiency and hence impacted the production. Data diagnosis was performed by hierarchy: Field; Group; Area; Well. A large number of wells were screened out based on production performance, reservoir pressure trends, geological characterisation, petrophysical evaluation, well integrity and remaining reserves. Reservoir engineering analytical approach and steady state modelling were performed to understand the specific impact of each challenge on production. This also provided an important insight that led to sub-divide the field into areas according to production challenges. Some of the areas were having lifting problems with or without sanding and others showed low productivity. Subsequently, the systematic ‘device-solution’ part of the AID process was implemented for defining the optimal well treatment considering operational risks, wellbore restrictions and economics. Based on this classification, a technology screening involving mechanical and chemical options was performed for identifying multiple potential solutions per group of wells located in specific areas. Production enhancement studies in mature assets are typically performed over a long period of time. The AID process introduced in this paper allows engineers to perform this type of studies in a timely manner. Its functionality has been successfully evaluated on a case study where sanding and fluid lifting challenges have been addressed.
