POC of Bio-Fuel Application in Drilling Rigs Power Generating
Abstract The purpose of this project is to trial the utilization of Bio Fuel blend B20 Bio Diesel In operator’s drilling rigs, to alleviate Carbon and Green House Gases emissions footprint as part of operator’s 2050 Strategy of Sustainability. Operator’s rig fleet conducts drilling and workover activities, utilizing conventional diesel generators to generate power output for various rig equipment to carry out the required drilling and workover operations. The scope of This project is to explore and trial utilizing Bio-Fuel blend B20 as an alternative biodiesel blend to conventional regular diesel. The Bio Fuel Blend B20 is to be utilized in the active drilling rig’ engines for a pilot study, without the need for engine modification requirements. Objectives / Scope The purpose of this project is to Trial the utilization of Bio Fuel blend B20 (Bio Diesel) In operator’s drilling rigs, to alleviate Carbon and Green House Gases Emissions footprint as part of operator 2050 Strategy of Sustainability. The scope of this project is to explore and trial utilizing Bio-Fuel blend B20 as an alternative biodiesel blend to conventional regular diesel. The Bio Fuel blend B20 is to be utilized in the active drilling rig’ engines for a pilot study, without the need of engine modification requirements. methods and procedures Methods, Procedures, Process Professional TFT outlined the following: B20 compatibility with the available rigs.B20 availability with the available local supplier.Cross check with CAT team, the most capable engine series that can work with B20 without any modification.Conducted a survey to locate the rigs with CAT 3500 engine series.Set a success criteria and selected 2 candidate rigs. Results, Observations, Conclusions Bio diesel was successfully run on 2 rigs with CAT 3500 series engines on for a period of approximately 3-month time. 100% HSE and adherence to operator HSE guidelines were successfully incorporated and adhered to during the pilot project. The pilot study confirmed a sustainable alternative to regular diesel without impacting the performance or maintenance requirement or for the Diesel engines. The pilot study confirmed that locally available biodiesel without any additional overseas transportation carbon footprint is available for 2 rigs’ operations on a continuous basis and has met the reliability of its logistics and volume deliveries as per requirements.Market study demonstrated local availability to tune of +/- 100 KL / day KL / day B20 blend that could power sustainable fuel to +/-20 number of diesel powered operator rigs on continuous round the clock basis. However, in depth audit review is required to ascertain the carbon neutrality of the biodiesel produced by such suppliers. The carbon footprint, if any for the production/logistics and other activities are to be offset to calculate the final life cycle savings in each individual case.Potential upscaling of utilization, is subject to the availability and supply of B20 through Group Companies, and is based on higher management sensitivity analysis based on unit cost per bbl. Novel / Additive Information A Lifecycle reduction of 20% of CO²e reduced as a carbon footprint during operations of 2 rigs during the trial period. equivalent to Carbon sequestered by 7,894 tree seedlings grown for 10 years. Equivalent to taking 106 fossil fueled cars off the road for one year. The value added from the projects is a testament to the efforts of operator drilling operations to pursue the net zero emissions strategy 2045 targets.
