From Innovation to Success: Introducing a Novel Multilateral Completion System in the Middle East

Abstract Oil and gas operators are constantly searching for innovative methods to enhance productivity, optimize well flow, and reduce costs and environmental impacts, particularly in mature fields. This paper examines the engineering design, operational challenges, and strategic solutions of the first deployment of a novel TAML-4 multilateral completion system in a major oilfield in the Middle East. The primary objective is to analyze the methodologies, technologies, and best practices used to address challenges and optimize reservoir access, production efficiency, and overall well performance. The paper highlights the key factors contributing to the success of the system. The operator planned to drill a vertical main bore plus additional lateral producer well and required access to both wellbores for future intervention. To achieve this objective, a novel multilateral completion design was proposed. The paper provides a thorough analysis of the new completion design, inflow performance assessments, and operational strategies for the initial deployment of the system. It identifies critical success factors and potential challenges in implementing the new multilateral completion system, including junction design and reliability requirements, casing integrity and zonal isolation techniques, as well as completion and future intervention flexibility. Strategies to address these challenges are explored to ensure the successful execution of the system's first deployment in the region. By examining the challenges faced and the strategies implemented, a comprehensive understanding of the design aspects and operational benefits is gained, highlighting their significance in achieving sustainable well completion. The utilization of advanced multilateral completion technologies, implementation of robust engineering design practices, effective management of operational challenges, and precise field execution lead to the success of the system's first deployment in the region. The new multilateral system helped the operator maximize reservoir connectivity, production rates, and the economic value of their asset. In conclusion, the initial deployment of the system is a significant milestone in the industry, indicating a shift towards technological innovation and operational excellence. This is achieved by improving reservoir access and optimizing production rates. The paper emphasizes the importance of continuous innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing in advancing the field of multilateral well completions and meeting the evolving needs of the oil and gas industry. The success of the new TAML-4 multilateral completion system is a significant advancement in the region's oil and gas sector. The deployment of the system demonstrates the region's commitment to using advanced solutions to optimize production and operational efficiency. By sharing the integrated analysis, engineering design and lessons learned, this paper aims to contribute to the ongoing pursuit of excellence in the oil and gas industry and promote sustainable and responsible resource development.
