Sustainable Innovation in Multilateral Technology: Enhancing Lateral Access Windows for Eco-Friendly Oil Production
Abstract Multilateral well construction and completion has been a cornerstone of sustainable field development in the Middle East. It has played vital role in the production performance and extend well life while minimizing environmental impact. Furthermore, the recent advancement in the technologies has extended the benefits and expand the potential of the utilization. These innovations focus on implementing variable inflow control and monitoring for both main bore and laterals, maintaining lateral access, and promoting sustainable practices. Combining multilateral and intelligent completion technologies has proven highly effective in expanding field potential, particularly in the Middle East. This strategy enhances well economics and sustainably extends field production life. The strategic deployment of multilateral technology in field development has demonstrated tangible results, affirming the system's sustainability and efficacy. Industry appetite for advancement drives collaboration between operators and service providers, fostering further innovations. A notable development integrates control line feed-through capabilities with a field-tested, through-completion intervention multilateral window system. This paper explores the eco-friendly development, rigorous testing, and a successful Middle Eastern case study of this integrated system, emphasizing its sustainability advantages in intelligent multilateral applications. This paper examines the progression of through-completion intervention access in multilateral branches, emphasizing its impact on field development, recovery rates, and strategic decision-making. Successful implementation of multilateral lateral re-entry window technology across multiple wells in the region has demonstrated consistent and improved field management outcomes. The transition from single wellbores or basic dual laterals to enhanced dual lateral wells with intelligent completions and lateral access has enabled independent flow control and continuous lateral monitoring. This innovation optimizes resource utilization and reduces environmental impact through intelligent flow management in both main bore and lateral zones. The research highlights ongoing initiatives to enhance multilateral installations' reliability and adaptability, targeting maximum efficiency with minimal ecological footprint. Recent technological advancements and field studies showcase successful implementation of sustainable intelligent multilateral strategies in the region, contributing to decreased CAPEX and OPEX, alongside a substantially reduced carbon footprint. This paper explores intelligent completion and multilateral technology advancements in the Middle East, highlighting sustainable field development strategies. It demonstrates how innovative approaches optimize resource utilization, reduce environmental impact, and enhance production economics through integrated technological solutions.
