Novel Approach of Rig Sizing Automation for 100 X Growth

Abstract Rig type selection is very critical in all Exploratory & Appraisal wells that is being drilled in Operating Company as Rig Sizing, which is part of the Rig Selection process, intends to ensure that the selected rig can handle all anticipated loads during well construction and intervention operations. Drilling rigs may be subdivided into several component systems for design and sizing. Although the following systems groupings are arbitrary, they serve as a basis for the selection process: PowerHoistingDerrick and SubstructureRotaryCirculatingPressure control These groups, although broad in nature, cover most important aspects of rig design requirements. Rig selection, which occurs after rig sizing, is not completely quantitative. Although the objective is to select the most cost-effective rig that will drill the well in terms of Horsepower (hp) requirements Vs well design requirements. Once well is assigned to drilling Engineer based on e-prognosis, all Drilling Engineer / Team leader does manual calculation or uses excel sheet for Rig selections and based on this calculation rig is selected and embedded in Drilling Workover schedule (DWS), and then a particular rig is assigned to drill that well. To improve above procedures several brainstorming sessions were called with Operating Company IT solution teams to discuss the proposal of automation, a business proposal was developed showcasing the added benefits of this automation and was presented to the IT board committee and the project was approved. The automation into web-based system where DE can select any particular rig and all specification of that rig will be available in drop down menu and with some parameter input from DE, results are displayed and rig selection process is done, to validate the working principle and results some DE's were assigned as focal points and a through validating process was done and this system went live to be used by all Operating Company drilling functions. Manual calculation tends to have many flaws which can leads to disastrous effects and overall cost impact. With many YDP and new drilling engineer are being integrated into drilling function the overall risk significantly increases. With the automation of rig sizing web-based solutions implemented in Operating Company, there was an improvement in efficiency and accuracy of rig selections by the DE and 50% saving in terms of Manhour. Also, wrong selection of a Rig will be avoided as happened in the past. This paper summarizes the lesson learnt, awareness campaign, design processes, challenges encountered, which can be considered a potential approach for addressing all rig selection issues in Operating Company wells.
