Performing Arts and Noblemen Education: New Perspectives from the Library and Archive of the Collegio San Carlo in Modena (18th–19th Centuries)
English Abstract: The educational curriculum devised for the nobility of the Ancien Régime devoted considerable space to the performing arts. The programme of studies undertaken by young aristocrats was not limited to literary, philosophical, and scientific subjects. It also encompassed a series of other disciplines, designated as arti cavalleresche (knightly arts), which included theatre, dance, music, and the practice of the esercizi d’armi and the cavallerizza , crossing genre boundaries by mixing media, performing arts, and martial arts. The documents preserved in the library and the historical archives of the Fondazione Collegio San Carlo in Modena constitute a valuable resource, affording insight into the phenomenon of the performing arts in the education of the nobility and in the production circuit of theatre representations in aristocratic circles. An interconnected approach and analysis of the practice of drama, dance and music within a college portray the links to the cultural life of the court, highlighting the latter’s social and political values between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Through librettos, posters, theatre programmes and scores, the history of the accademie and of their pedagogical and aesthetic model reveals the entanglements of artistic education and performances in Italy during a period of profound transformation.
