Music Publishing in Kraków in 1850–1918

English Abstract: The article presents the results of research into the activities and output of music publishers operating in Kraków in the second half of the so-called ‘long nineteenth century’, that is, in the years 1850–1918. The second half of the nineteenth century was a period of cultural flourishing in Kraków under Austrian rule. From the middle of the century until the end of the World War I, a number of music publishers were active in Kraków – 34 institutions in total. The article provides a brief characterisation of the source material used to reconstruct the editorial output of the publishers in question. The activities of the most significant publishing institutions are discussed in historical terms, with particular focus on the bookshop of Juliusz Wildt (established in 1845 and operational until the 1970s), the bookshop of Stanisław Andrzej Krzyżanowski (founded in 1870) and the music bookshop of Antoni Piwarski and Company (operating since 1897). Additionally, selected aspects of the commercial relations between composers and publishers, as well as the attitudes of both parties towards published music texts, are discussed. Conclusions are drawn from the analysis of the graphic design of music prints. Furthermore, the types of published musical repertoire and the presence of published works in the concert life of Kraków are discussed.
