UKRAINE’S STRATEGIC CONTAINMENT AND BRITAIN’S STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE: COMMON GROUND TO PROTECTING THE INFORMATION SPACE

This paper explores the shared interests and potential avenues for collaboration between Ukraine and the United Kingdom in fortifying national information spaces against contemporary hybrid threats. Despite differing geopolitical contexts, both nations face escalating challenges in cyberspace, disinformation campaigns, and critical infrastructure protection. By examining Ukraine’s pursuit of strategic containment – especially in response to the full-scale invasion by Russia in 2022 – and Britain’s sustained strategic advantage, rooted in institutions like the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), this study identifies overlap in threat perceptions, best practices, and bilateral as well as multilateral cooperation frameworks. Additionally, it highlights the renewed relevance of the Intermarium concept as a regional security architecture that could complement UK–Ukraine cooperation. Conclusively, the paper underscores the necessity of integrated strategies – encompassing legislative reforms, technological innovations, robust partnerships, and public engagement – to effectively safeguard national security and democratic values.
