Results from the Second Ice Prediction Workshop by Using the CIRA Cartesian Method

This paper gives an overview of the CIRA (Italian Aerospace Research Centre) results for the AIAA 2nd Ice Prediction Workshop, which was held in June 2023 during the SAE International Conference on Icing of Aircraft, Engines, and Structures. In particular, the in-house 3D Cartesian method was used to analyze the ice accretion benchmarks proposed by the organizers. The aim was to assess the prediction capabilities of a computational chain based on immersed boundaries. The results of the numerical campaign are tackled by comparing the obtained solutions with the IPW2 experimental database containing measurements on straight and swept wings. The main outcomes and limitations of the above method are extensively discussed. The results of the numerical campaign are tackled by comparing the obtained solutions with the IPW2 experimental database containing measurements on straight and swept wings. The main outcomes and limitations of the above method are extensively discussed. The novelty of the paper is the set of the numerical results obtained by using the immersed boundary technique. Indeed, it formalizes the data presented at the workshop, which is important to assess the evolution of these kinds of methods and their accuracy for aero-icing applications.

Abstract

Indeed, it formalizes the data presented at the workshop, which is important to assess the evolution of these kinds of methods and their accuracy for aero-icing applications.
