Research on seismic behavior of variable friction damper-RC frame structures

This study presents a novel variable cross-section friction damper (VCS-FD). The friction output of the damper is regulated by the friction plate’s "slope" motion along the variable cross-section of the steel plate. Its structural configuration and working mechanism were analyzed. A finite element (FE) model of the VCS-FD was developed in ABAQUS. A comparison between experimental and FE results confirms the validity and accuracy of the modeling approach. Based on these findings, nine VCS-FD models were analyzed through FE simulations . The accuracy of the theoretical friction model was verified. The effects of key design parameters on the seismic performance of the structure were analyzed, and optimal parameter values were recommended. The connection methods and layout configurations of the VCS-FD within an RC frame were also investigated. The results suggest that: (1) The proposed friction model accurately predicts the mechanical behavior of the VCS-FD; (2) The total height of the connected wall limbs and the beam section should not exceed 4000 mm and 400 mm, respectively; (3) The seismic performance of an RC frame structure with VCS-FDs is significantly improved compared to a conventional RC frame. Notably, a continuous arrangement of VCS-FDs along the full height of the structure is more effective in controlling interstory drift angles.
