The aim of this article is to present various strategies used by first grade primary school students to prevent the emotion of shame. Based on focus group interviews, the author seeks to identify how these strategies manifest in children and what motives lie behind their choices. In the children’s narratives, the prevention strategy involves making appropriate preparations to avoid the emergence of shame, as well as engaging in avoidance behaviors aimed at protecting themselves from feeling shame. Additionally, the author highlights the motives behind choosing these strategies, which point to fear and anxiety about rejection and negative evaluation from significant others.
