Redefining Emerging Economies: The REE Framework for Nuanced Understanding and Engagement
Conventional classifications of emerging economies often rely on one-dimensional metrics or geographic groupings, failing to capture complex developmental realities, leading to suboptimal business strategies and policy interventions. This article introduces the REE (Redefine, Embed, Elevate) Framework, integrating UNCTAD’s multidimensional Productive Capacities Index with the KOF Globalization Index to analyze 47 emerging and frontier economies from 2009 to 2021. Using Dynamic Time Warping clustering analysis to detect similar developmental trajectories, I identified four distinct groups with unique strengths and challenges: Steady Risers (gradual, balanced growth), Robust Accelerators (strong performance across multiple sectors), Talent-Rich Challengers (exceptional human capital amid economic headwinds), and Resource Rollercoasters (institutional strength amid resource-driven volatility). This nuanced classification challenges traditional categorizations and provides insights for multinational enterprises refining market entry strategies, policymakers designing targeted interventions based on development signatures, and international business scholars seeking to develop theories that reflect the diverse and evolving nature of emerging economies.
